You may know that since Steemfest2 I've been playing with ways to recycle extra t-shirts in blog posts here on Steemit, but in reality, I've been slicing and dicing, dying and printing and shredding t-shirts since I was in middle school.
Blame my punk rock phase.
After we got back from Steemfest with a few extra Smart Media Token tees, I decided to share a quick tutorial about how to turn a spare tee into a tote bag...
+THE SMART MEDIA TOTE-BAG TUTORIAL +
It's funny how as a creative you're usually never just content to let things BE. I'm sure if you're anything like me, the one week window you have to edit your posts here on Steemit seems SO FINAL. If it makes you hivey just thinking about it, I get you. But knowing me, and my constant need to tinker and iterate, it's probably for the best.
Sometimes things are just FINISHED.
But other times you get to keep playing ;) - I DIGRESS!
THIS WEEK I posted another tutorial about how to turn t-shirts into bracelets...
+ OLD TEE TO CHUNKY BRACELET IN 10! +
If you check out the post you'll know what I mean by using the two finger method for bracelets and smaller cords. But, after the posts were all said and done I had an idea....
What if I combined both tee shirt DIYS and made the GREATEST T-SHIRT TOTE BAG THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN!!?! Daunting task, I know. But I was up for it.
So the other night, during a few episodes of Only Fools and Horses (a ridiculous British show from the 80'-90s HIGHLY recommend) I got to weaving, using the 4 finger method, in order to make the widest and comfy-ist shoulder strap I could...
When I realized I had gotten carried away and made a shoulder strap that was WAY too long, I opted for two smaller "handles" instead. They still fit over my shoulder, but the soft t-shirt material stretches a TON, so a shoulder strap meant that with any weight in the bag would put it at my knees. Not very practical...
When my new straps were finished, I chopped up the existing loops that made up the straps on the bag and used them to tie the ends together...
Even though I never had to walk a long distance to go do my morning yoga or take a shower, having these straps makes it SUCH an easier trip. Maybe I'm just high on my own supply, and riding the excitement of making a new thing, but I feel like having the straps gives the top of the bag way more structure, and I'm not as concerned about things falling out of the sides, since the loops were SO long in the original design.
Still thinking of other ways this "rope" finger weaving technique could lend a hand in our day to day, but for now, I'm pretty happy with my V2 Franken-bag.
Hope this jogs a few ideas for you and your next big DIY idea. The creativity of the folks on this platform never ceases to amaze me...
