Does anyone know why it is that sometimes you get on the mat, and youâre an absolute CHAMP, and other times, you arrive and feel like âWhoâs body is this???â
Iâve had a pinched nerve in my back for two days, and despite nearly 9k step day yesterday, I woke up feeling locked up and in quite a bit of pain when I move. Iâm not sure what brings these pinched nerves about, other than long bouts of sitting, but its always the same exact kind of pain.

When I first started to do research I thought it was Sciatica, which is where a back mis-alignment presses on a nerve in your low back, youâll feel the pinch on the left or right of your tailbone. Upon visiting the Chiropractor, I learned its actually an SI joint problem, which I learned was common, because the sciatic nerve is also bundled up in this often very locked up spot- itâs a potential hive for angriness for a lot of keyboard warriors.
Without boring you with the details, your SI joint is where your pelvis and your Sacrum meet and when other places in your low back are acting up, and are hyper or hypo mobile, these joints pick up the slack and get strained and well, to be technical, get angry.
The good news is that usually with some gentle activity and stretching (after the inflammation goes down,) I can usually make the adjustment myself, and POP! - Things click back into place and thereâs almost immediate relief.
Todayâs yoga is called Hatha Yoga for a Hangover and while I donât have a hangover, I knew Iâd need something gentle and not too long..
I hit the mat feeling pretty rough, tired, tight, not able to breathe deep, couldnât touch my toes. I kept thinking to myself..
Whoâs body is this?? Did I swap places with an 80 year old??
Fortunately, as my practice went on, it started to feel like the clock was turning back and the 29-year old body Iâm used to showed up- âHow nice of you to join us!â I said to my hips and shoulders.
Even though it was mentally challenging to do so, I took it slow and at the end of practice after a lengthy happy-baby pose, I did one final stretch before shavasanaâŠ

aaaand as I exhaledâŠ. POP!
if youâve ever been to a chiropractor, you know exactly the kind of relief Iâm talking about, itâs like this pressure and weight is lifted, and things are back in place the way they should be.
I stood up and that sharp angry nerve pain felt a good 70% better. -YES!
Todayâs plan is to keep mobile. When I need to use the restroom, Iâll walk down to the toilets on site, and try not to be seated for long periods at a time. Also, I think my good friend âBorisâ (as Ella has named him) will be making an appearance later this afternoon as well.
meet Boris, he's a hot water bottle- we've been getting quite close lately...
I hope this little morning anatomical blog finds you well- if youâre having back pain or if youâre prone to back pain, try to set yourself a reminder on your phone or computer to stand up and take a walk every now and then. Your back will thank you, and hopefully you wont end up like I did at the start of this week.
OBVIOUSLY I am 1000% NOT A DOCTOR - please do your own research. This is just one weirdo on the internetâs experience and should not be taken as medical advice.
